Kungsholmen

This CD is one in a series from the Stockholm City Archives. Each contains records from the Rotemanarkivet. The Roteman system of Stockholm was put in place to deal with the burgeoning growth of the city during the late 19th century. It divided the city into wards, and each ward had a clerk who kept a detailed ledger of the properties and their inhabitants. Information on these individuals includes:
  • name
  • birth date and place
  • occupation
  • place moved from and to
  • supplementary information such as education, military service, medical care, poor benefits and criminality.

The system was in use from 1878 until 1926. The Roteman system did not replace, but ran parallel with the records kept by the church. The wards, however, did not usually coincide geographically with parishes. The wards included in this CD represent the Stockholm city parishes of Kungsholmen, Ulrika Eleonora, and St. Göran.

Please note that these CDs contain much more than records of genealogical importance. This CD/DVD set allows you to experience the environment and living conditions of Kungsholmen through 9500 photos, drawings, maps and archival documents. A film from the archives of Sveriges Television is also included. Over 500 ariticles provide both research tips and background information on the history and socio-economic conditions of the district. This content spans the period from the 16th century through to modern times.

In Swedish. Published by Stockholm City Archives. System requirements: PC with Windows 98 or higher, minimum 64 MB RAM, 300 MHz processor, 1024 X 768 graphics resolution, and 16-bit color.
